It’s all about speed limits, timelines, stopping accurately in stations and taking in the scenery, of course. You’re scored at the end on your performance, and trust me it’s practice-makes-perfect stuff.

Train Crazy Once you’ve got OpenBVE, some track and rolling stock make your selections in the main menu. Right next to Start is a Mode of Driving drop-down box, allowing you to choose between Arcade for complete newbies and the curious, Normal for your average simulator buff and Expert in case you drive a train for a living and simply can’t go the weekend without climbing aboard. Arcade mode displays your score, information pertaining to speed limits and stopping indicators, Normal removes these but maintains driver aids and Expert essentially leaves you out in the cold, with no driving aids or reminders on your way. Conclusion I’m certainly no train buff, despite wanting one I never had a train set as a child (sob) and I’ve never felt inclined to buy a train simulator. However, OpenBVE really is quite fun. BVE Trainsim (originally Boso View Express) is a Japanese three-dimensional computer-based train simulator. It is notable for focusing on providing an accurate driving experience as viewed from inside the cab, rather than creating a network of other trains ther trains passed along the route are only displayed as stationary objects. I have MSTS, but thinking of getting Trainz 2009. Is it better than MSTS?. Or is MSTS better than Trainz 2009? Firstly, MSTS is a very old program (released 2001), not that that's necessarily a bad thing - whereas Trainz 2009 came out this year, but is a development of the older Trainz games rather than a radically new version. Other than that, they are very different types of program, and they are both very good, so it depends on what you actually want from a train game.

MSTS is basically a train driving simulator, with limited scope for viewing outside the cab and very limited AI for computer controlled trains. Trainz has more potential for setting up loads of trains with AI drivers and schedules, and watching them run along a route for example, although you can also drive with a cab view (but with less realism than MSTS). If you like MSTS and want more of the same, I suggest you get Rail Simulator, which was made by the same developers as MSTS and has much improved graphics and physics. If you want more flexibility and freedom of movement and don't JUST want to drive trains on fixed missions (which I personally find boring, but each to their own), then Trainz is definitely worth a look. As I said, MSTS is just about driving trains, whereas Trainz is more like having your own virtual model railway to play with. It's also a lot easier to build routes in Trainz than is the case in either MSTS or Rail Simulator, so if you want to create your own routes with ease then Trainz is definitely the game for you. If train driving is your thing, it's also worth checking out the free BVE as phil mentioned, or openBVE.

Although graphically it's very retro and 1990s looking, it offers a very realistic driving experience, and there are a number of UK routes available. A final sim worth mentioning is SimSig - it's a completely realistic (and 100% accurate) train signalling simulator, which will either fill you with horror or excitement depending on how interested you are in signalling!
