I have a 2013 Dell laptop with windows 8. I have successfully downloaded and installed all updates with one exception. This is the 'Intel Corporation - Storage Controller-Intel(R) Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller' (6.9 MB). Repeated attempts to install it have failed and I always receive the failure code 80070103. I have followed various leads with no success. I also find that I cannot download or install the offer on 'store' to update to windows 8.1 for free. I get error code 0x80080008.

No download begins. Perhaps this failure is related to the one above. Can anyone help me? Original title: repeated failure to install an important update.

You can 'hide' any update (but you don't want to do so). Important updates are not necessarily security-related. Important updates include optional, non-security software updates as well as driver updates for third-party hardware. Left to its own devices (i.e., set to Automatic), Automatic Updates will (attempt to) install all Important updates - whether you or your computer need/want them or not (e.g., the Intel driver in your first post).

The 80070103 error's telling you that the driver update is not appropriate for your computer (despite what Windows Update says). You don't want to install it so you should hide it. That being said.

Can you tell me of all the people who have reported same issue, how many have touch screen laptops? Its just a theory on my part that only those laptops which are not touch screen are facing this issue.
