I built an eGPU built for a mid 2011 27' Updating progress (3 Dec) To those who have built similar rigs, before I get crazy with it. Is there anything I'm missing, I've overlooked, or that wont work plug & play?

(in terms of hardware) Shopping List:. (@Newegg, $224.99 until 26 Nov). ( not a fan of the paperclip method). to 12V DC Barrel Plug (Dimensions: 2.1mm. 5.5mm) to power the Akitio. Dell DA-2 (search eBay, lots of options). (linking to the storefront) Already Have:.

iMac (3.4 GHz Intel Core i7). external monitor. Windows 10 via BootCamp (mac side for daily driving, windows for gaming) Edit: going for the dell da-2 method, found pre made cables on eBay as well.

Edit 2: ordered the card (newegg $224.99, no tax / shipping) Akitio thunder 2 (amazon prime, $219) dell da-2 and cable (eBay, both for $26) all should arrive by the Dec 1 Notes: I've seen people customizing the boxes some too. I want to thread the da-2 through the housing to keep things clean looking. So I'll be drilling a hole through the back side of the akitio and maybe use a rubber grommet or something to keep it tidy and secure.

I also want to be able to enclose the whole thing so the akitio cover will be getting some ventilation. I'm considering case fan screens to cover the holes, it'll just depend on how much I cut out. And of course custom paint! Mulling ideas around but haven't locked anything down yet. Update: 30 Nov 16. Got all my pieces, but ran into a slight snag.

(BOO) The cable I ordered from eBay was made incorrectly and caused the Dell DA-2 to short out instantly, contacted seller and sent pictures of the cable, he confirmed he made a mistake and is sending a new cable. Box and card still power with the Akitio supplied PSU. I was able to get the card to be seen and installed the latest drivers on my late 2015 MBP just kidding.

Doesn't work. Will attempt to test the iMac shortly. Lots of issues here. Error 43, black screen if windows is started with akitio connected. Not being recognized. Grrr Thinking about painting the case white, I think it will look nice with the blue LED, cutting out top and side ventilation a using a metal mesh to cover the holes.

Update: 01 Dec Yyyeeeesssssssss!!!!!! Made the necessary changes To the bad DA-2 adapter while waiting for the replacement.

Everything works!!! Instant boot up and recognition by iMac, no need to plug in at specific times, no error 43, just 90-100 fps on epic settings on overwatch. I'll test other titles ones they're installed again. Thanks for all the help along the way. I'll update again once the box is enclosed and painted.
