I'm waiting for my monitor to arrive in the next few days and obviously I need an adapter so I'm wondering wether to get a mini displayport to DVI or to VGA to use with this external monitor and possibly with a projector for presentations at uni. I could get either and they would both work on the Acer P223W but maybe the projectors are more likely to have VGA as it has been way more commonly used as a computer display input (at my college all the inputs are VGA). So at uni they might have DVI on the displays but its more likely to have VGA. On the other hand VGA is technically worse than DVI.
Is the difference noticeable enough to get DVI or should I go for VGA to be more universal/compatible. Thanks for your input!

On the very first attempt to use it the picture flickered a bit but was otherwise OK. When the class ends I walk over to my second lecture and plug in my computer and the adapter and NOTHING happens. I try again and the screen on my mac goes dark then nothing. I have all my students walk back over to the last calssroom and the thing still doesn't work. My first lecture of the year was a real stinker as a result.
Very disappointed. I spent the extra $20 because I thought I was buying quality. Go buy a generic knockoff.

We have bought dozens over the past 6 years for our schools and have also bought some from off brand sites. These brand names will all work initially but often give out at the same rate as the off brand dongles (3-6 months). Trying another dongle from a (big online) brand name competitor that has high reviews so fingers crossed.
As we don't require going into high resolution projector displays XGA/WXGA is the most common, or lower resolution so the off brand ones are just as good (aka break as often) as the name brand dongle. If going into a higher resolution display, this my be the best choice. More (Read full review). Written by AtlNCS A from Atlanta. Dec 2, 2015 39 of 46 people found this useful. I normally use them to connect two laptops to flat TVs or a projector at home, but I regularly take either of these connectors on presentations to connect a laptop to projectors of different brands. I have never had any problems. More (Read full review). Written by Carlos O from Bakersfield.

Best Answer: A note regarding the 13' MacBook Pro: You CAN use two Thunderbolt displays with the 13', same as the A note regarding the 13' MacBook Pro: You CAN use two Thunderbolt displays with the 13', same as the 15' and 17'. The difference is that if you connect a second Thunderbolt display to the 13' then the internal display is automagically deactivated. The 15' and 17' will drive all three displays with no trouble.
